Trans Rapper MZ NEON Unleashes Her Genre-Bending EP “Queen Hyena Vol. 1”

Trans Rapper MZ NEON Unleashes Her Genre-Bending EP “Queen Hyena Vol. 1”

May 1st marks the highly anticipated release of Mz Neon’s industrial-tinged, transversal rap debut Queen Hyena Vol. 1.; The first in a series of mixtape EPs set for release in 2020.
Following the demo-release of her infamous single “Pussy Stick” in 2019, Paper Magazine premiered a documentary on the artist and her journey as a transgender rapper, eponymous titled “Mz Neon”

The headline read “Mz Neon is punk to her core.” Further stating that “ ‘Pussy Stick’ represents a bold reclamation of self…celebrating the sacredness of raw trans femme sexuality.”
Following her self released single and documentary, Mz Neon was invited to Melbourne, Australia to perform at Changes Festival and conduct a panel discussion alongside No Wave pioneer Lydia Lunch (who is notably featured on Mz Neon’s follow up Queen Hyena Vol. 2 set for release this summer). Triple R Radio in Melbourne conducted an on-air interview with Mz Neon before returning home to be interviewed on Snoop Dogg’s Merry Jane Network. Gay Times swiftly featured Mz Neon on the cover of their September issue of Amplify, profiling her in a list of the top 7 most influential trans women of the year.

Mz Neon continued to perform extensively, while steadily nearing completion of her long-anticipated debut release. She was uniquely billed alongside seasoned underground luminaries like My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Egyptian Lover, Light Asylum, Missing Persons, and Marc Almond of Soft Cell. In March 2020, Mz Neon had the unprecedented opportunity of supporting Azealia Banks live at the Globe Theater, Los Angeles.

The ubiquitous influences of the underground punk and industrial scenes Mz Neon has transversed are apparent on Queen Hyena Vol 1. The record explores a sonically diverse and sophisticated musical palette; juxtaposing a unique blend of experimentalism and well-crafted songwriting. Vol. 1 features noteworthy guest collaborators including Bruno Coviello of Light Asylum, Mike Wells of Gridlock and emerging NYC techno producer, Iron Fitz; bridging a unique and unlikely crossover between contemporary hip hop, industrial, punk, and bedroom pop. (In true form, every song was written and recorded by Mz Neon in her, then 6X8’ bedroom in Hollywood during 2019.)

Through provocative lyrical storytelling Mz Neon weaves a complex yet engaging and voyeuristic narrative throughout; unpacking experiences she’s lived, interwoven with fantasies alike. From overcoming obstacles and societal fetishization as a transgender woman to Orwellian portrayals of post-consumerist dystopian landscapes. (prophetically on “Real Hardcore” she describes being “Captured by manufactured fractal hackers, invading like body snatchers..” ) intermixed with occult laced domination and subverted religious idolatry; depictions of tortured sex between ascended masters as the panacea for mans suffering on earth… phew! There’s truly something for everyone on this iconic record that vividly illustrates Mz Neon’s underlying truth, which is aptly stranger (and more fun) than most fiction.

“Performing is my world and it’s the only place I feel normal. The reality I create onstage is like another dimension that activates my highest truth.” She elaborates, saying “This record is a very personal and vulnerable release for me, despite its boisterous overtone.” She continues “The unforeseen opportunity of releasing this during such uncertain and introspective times may, hopefully, allow people the inward perspective needed to unpack this highly personal and raw introduction to my world.”

The real message of Mz Neon reads between the lines of her characterized persona; beyond the skillful exhibitionism and explosive delivery…A quietly triumphant and introspective diary.
A personal journey of discovery… that is as unique as it is relatable.
