‘We are prisoners of our own mind, struggling under the surface. Through daily routines, we may hide behind smiling faces to mask our problems and how we truly feel, fearing judgment, misunderstanding, and rejection. We’re drawn towards a face that smiles, but smiling faces have been known to lie’… The debut concept EP “Smiling Faces” by Calico’s Gambit delivers a refreshing vintage indie blues pop/rock sound fused with poetic lyricism and detailed layering. With influences such as The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, and Bob Dylan, Christopher Helmeste (singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist) works at the core of Calico’s Gambit with a variety of studio musicians and creative collaborators, constantly experimenting with the band’s sound. Working with producer/recording engineer Gord Richards, the debut EP was meticulously recorded and mastered in Toronto, ON at Oak Recording Studio run by Damon de Szegheo (associated with acclaimed Canadian artists including Juno Award winners Serena Ryder, The Barenaked Ladies, and Bruce Cockburn). As a strong supporter of global reforestation efforts to fight climate change, Calico’s Gambit has partnered with One Tree Planted with a mission to plant one tree for every debut EP purchased from www.calicosgambit.com (focussing on deforested areas within the Amazon Rainforest).
