STARS, THE NEW SINGLE BY MYKY – A SONG TO THE FREEDOM OF NOT BEING FOR EVERYONE

Stars: a hymn to love and acceptance, a delicate invitation to be oneself, a song to the freedom of not being for everyone

Stars, the new single by Neapolitan singer-songwriter Myky, produced by Domenico Kibran Messina of K1 Studios, is available online since Tuesday 16 March. The single, two years after the release of Mars, anticipates the next long-awaited album Gemini, which could be defined as a real musical project: a project of astral and sentimental conjunctions, born under the sign of Gemini, for twin brothers, for twin souls, for all hearts united by a special bond of love that, quite simply, is destined to be, that the whole universe seems to conspire for it to be, and that therefore, even when it suffers a blow, is repaired with gold and becomes stronger and more precious than before.

“As a child,” says Myky, “I was intrigued by that extraordinary force that binds people to their destiny, it is an energy, it is incomprehensible, and yet it is the thing that is most real to me. I am a Gemini, a dreamer, with my head in the clouds, looking upwards, and I also have a passion for the stars and the constellations. Ever since I was a child, my father and I used to spend summer evenings gazing up at the starry sky, and he would point out all the constellations to me, teach me their names, and say a phrase that enriched me and profoundly marked my being: “Aim for the stars, and if you don’t, you’ll end up somewhere near the moon”.

The name of the single could only be Stars, which represents a moment of rebirth after an extremely difficult year for music and art in general. However, these difficulties have not extinguished the creative enthusiasm of this dreamy artist.

Stars is a hymn to love and acceptance, even of what is considered “imperfections” but are in fact the hallmarks of everyone’s uniqueness. The song opens with a statement: ‘It’s me, nothing more, nothing less than perfect. The perfection referred to in the lyrics is not about the absence of defects, quite the opposite: one line – ‘And if you see my scars, they are filled with liquid gold’ – refers to the Japanese tradition of kintsugi, an ancient art which requires that broken vases or dishes are not discarded and thrown away, but repaired by soldering the shards with liquid gold or silver. In this way the cracks are not hidden: they become a precious texture that enhances the beauty of the object and its uniqueness.
Just like the cracks and scars that life leaves on each of us. It is gold, in the marvelous interweaving of references between text, images and notes of which Myky is a master, a recurring visual theme both in the photographs and in the official video clip of the single.

The video, a musical short film, was made in team with Salvatore Maiorano (Videomaker-filmmaker, who did the writing, direction and photography); Katia Galeazzi (Assistant director, assistant lighting); Flavia Tartaglia (Stage photographer, graphic designer, art director, assistant director); starring the actors Alessandro Balletta and Chiara Vitiello, and emphasises the invitation to free oneself from the toxic search for the approval of others because of which we sometimes tend to wear masks. Only by loving ourselves as we are will we allow others to see us as we are: perfect as stars! On the other hand, choosing to be and not to appear allows us to create authentic bonds, to put down roots instead of floating in our isolation (“And if you like the way I love the stars, and if you look at me I won’t go far”), it makes us free: the freedom not to be for everyone!
My music,” says the artist, “is the fruit of everything I have ever listened to, international pop: from Michael Jackson to Bruno Mars, The Weeknd and Justin Timberlake. This is also reflected in the choice of English, which for me is the most rhythmic and energetic language”. This apparent contradiction, which is not new in the artist’s work, partly responds to the need to wrap – almost hide – the sensitivity of her thoughts in a protective shell, and partly makes palpable the idea of the strength that springs from the fracture, from the vital energy of resilience.
Stars is available on Spotify and various digital stores since 16 March; the official video clip can be seen on the artist’s Facebook page and on the youtube channel MS Movie: www.youtube.com/c/SMMoviechannel; it is also possible to buy a copy of the Stars CD which, in addition to the single, contains a selection of covers of much-loved songs as a bonus.
