Interview with Nice Ghost

Hey Nice Ghost! We are loving your new single “Stranger” what inspired this song?

Well, I’m wicked introverted. Like, so you THINK you know what introverts are like, but I’m WAY over to that side, maybe even off the charts. Oddly though, I’m still drawn to people. In fact, I will walk for miles and miles around the densest areas of Los Angeles taking it all in – standing with pedestrians at crosswalks, waiting in line for a coffee, packed like sardines into a Metro train. But I won’t talk to anyone. Ever. I mean, you could literally smile at me and say “hey!” and if you’re a stranger, I’m more than likely to just nod and then get away from you. Having to suddenly come up with conversation… that’s way too much pressure. No way! I think it’s normal to be like this, but when explaining it to people, it sounds totally insane. So I wrote a song gently making fun of myself for it. It all started with a bass line, and it went from there.

The song sounds like it is about social distancing – did you write this recently or was it a coincidence?

So this is where it gets really weird. It is literally about social distancing, but I wrote it in 2016. And then when I scheduled all my singles for release, it was well before I’d even heard of COVID-19, so it’s one of the weirdest coincidences that I’ve ever seen.

What do you hope your followers feel after hearing the new single?

I’m hoping that in times like these it can make people smile and laugh – and remember, there’s no need to talk to that stranger. Leave ’em alone, for the sake of health and safety. Someday, you will be able to again, but right now… please no.

We know this is has been a tough time for many – what do you think has been the best thing to come out of it for you?

Free time for me is incredible. I have absolutely no trouble socially distancing myself, I’ve been doing that for years anyway. I’ve been very, very productive. I’m working on future albums/EPs, lots of new material, doing some online streaming stuff, etc. It’s really enabling me to spend time digging into planning the next few quarters for Nice Ghost. Of course, it’s not a good financial situation. I mean, us in the music industry are totally out of work right now, so that’s a little frightening but I know I’m not alone, so it’s going to be ok.

Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

First off, there are new singles every month until August, when the full-length album (titled “Digital” drops). Beside that (and looking further into the future), I hope to see you all at a live show someday. The full-band shows are going to be great – I’ve lined up some of my favorite players in the city and I think we’re going to put together something really spectacular. So stay tuned, because when it’s possible, it’s happening. Oh, and don’t worry – I’m WAY more social at shows and even if you’re a stranger, I would love to meet you. I love connecting with people that genuinely like the music. And I’m like, super approachable so don’t be afraid to stop me and say hi. If you break the ice, I won’t be nearly as nervous to meet you. Haha!

Tell us where we can get the new single and follow you on social media?
