Emerging Houston power trio Bärdo presents the first studio recorded glimpse into its prolific, eclectic, all original catalogue of Punk/Rock/Metal/Psych tune-smithing with the release of a three song suite titled, “The Trilogy.” The Ep’s instrumentation explores various styles of high energy guitar and bass while its lyrics berate the nature, origin, and outcomes of Technocratic Society. Which is not to say the group denies its complicity…
“The Trilogy” will be released on all online streaming platforms December 21st. A celebratory show will take place the next day, December 22nd, at White Swan Live, (4419 Navigation Blvd., Houston, TX 77011), along with Ramblin Boys, Rooftop Boxer, and Small Scale Mutiny. ($10 cover, doors at 8 pm, all ages) Bärdo has also issued a Spotify pre-save link for the Ep. Go to www.bardotheband.com for more information.
The songs making up “The Trilogy” stand on their own and also form a cohesive narrative about the present day Technocracy. The Ep contains all three as separate tracks and a fourth selection which combines them sequentially. The first cut, “Shiny Daggers,” clashes Metal styling with a dash of Emo. Lyrics profile the psychotic personality of one who seeks power. The next tune “Dungeon Master” is a straight up Punk number about the making of this controlling entity via an upbringing of neglect and isolation. The final Psych arrangement, Cyberc@ptivity, moodily proclaims that the deal is sealed. The Technocrats are in control. Before long, the killer robots will come.
“Isn’t it ironic,” guitar player/singer Frank Whitly wryly comments, “here we are complaining about our Technocrat overlords while fully depending on them for the methods to promote and distribute our music.” Indeed, Bärdo also owes a debt of gratitude to the internet for introducing them to their Led Zeppelin obsessed drummer Phil B. King, who quips “I’ll take a Technocrat over a major label any day.” King joined the outfit in early 2023. Self-taught Whitly and academically trained bassist Joshua Stewart started collaborating in 2021, individually and collectively writing songs and determining what direction the group would take. Stewart notes, “We both write in a variety of styles and the material is still somewhat all over the place, but our vision was like ‘what if Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye), had been the front person for Cheap Trick,‘ and voilà!”
Bärdo currently gigs in Houston and surrounding areas and hopes to branch out this coming year. Their plan is to keep releasing self-recorded Ep’s (mastered by Don Fury), and eventually put out a vinyl record. This band loves to write songs and perform and is thrilled to be a part of the thriving Texas music scene.
