Jonny Ong releases ‘Fools’, a masterclass in arrangement and production
‘Fools’ is the latest release from Jonny Ong, the artist who injected some life into the genre of psychedelia with previous single, ‘Isolation’. Now, he makes his triumphant return with ‘Fools’, a song which sees him build upon his previous successes and also venture into new territory.
‘Fools’ builds upon the mood and atmosphere Ong created with the release of ‘Isolation’. Astute, philosophical, and quietly observational, ‘Fools’ now adds in experiments with differing textures and places Ong firmly on the scene for new artists in the world of rock. But it’s not just rock that is presented to us with ‘Fools’ – there are elements of folk and jazz mixed in there too, alongside some respects paid to Ong’s idols, the giants of the psychedelia scene.
Whilst the lyrics of ‘Fools’ are decidedly in the camp of a cynical observer (“living in fantasy, hiding our misery like fools,”) the instrumentation and arrangement are nothing short of an absolute triumph, one which allows Ong to fully display his accomplishments as a musician, lyricist, and arranger.
