Oregon-based Spunj led by Sage McCommas is grabbing attention from Arizona to Portland Oregon. Spunj is a jam band on the rise.
With their high-energy, multi-genre shows, the four-piece based out of Eugene, Oregon draws on their diverse musical backgrounds to make their live shows a transcendent experience that goes well beyond the typical musical performance. Incorporating classic songwriting with improvisation, the band seamlessly transitions from genre to genre. Regulars of Spunj shows know they’re in for an energetic, dance-filled night.
Spunj has been on the touring scene in the Pacific Northwest since 2019. Relentless in their pursuit to bring their unique experience to as many people as possible, they have played everything from college parties to bars to established and timeless venues and festivals where they have opened for jam band legends to include Cycles, Universe Peoples, Dubtonic Kru, and Twiddle. During this time, they have established themselves and gained a notable following of their own.
The band released their full-length studio album which is available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, iTunes, and Bandcamp. While the album fills the musical void between shows, the best way to experience Spunj is always going to be at a live show. And with a full tour scheduled, there will be plenty of opportunities to come out and make a lasting memory in the weeks and months to come.
The quartet is a colorful patchwork of musical talent and includes Sage McCommas on drums/vocals, Josh Harris, guitar/vocals, David Richards, bass/saxophone/vocals, and Dan Underkofler, piano/guitar/vocals. McCommas hails from Austin, Texas, and attended Humboldt State University where he majored in music. Harris traveled west from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with nothing more than a knapsack and a stick where he met Sage. McCommas and Harris bonded over music and went on to form Spunj. Richards of Cottage Grove, Oregon is known for the hottest grooves on saxophone in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Underkofler hails from Fairfield, Connecticut, and is the newest addition to the band. He moved to Seattle with music on his mind and hasn’t looked back since leaving college in New Orleans.
Combined, these four musicians are a powerhouse of musical creativity. Their live performances consistently deliver good vibes and a fun time. The experience at a Spunj show is unmatched in the current jam band scene. If you have a true appreciation of the jam band genre, you won’t want to sleep on this amazing band.
