What is your artist name or what name do you go by?
My artist name is Jas.
What city do you represent?
Originally I’m from Beckley, West Virginia, but in terms of being an artist, being in Albany, New York has really helped shape my sound and style.
What got you started making music, or your craft?
I was always writing poems when I was little and then I started playing piano when I was 11, and that was kind of when I knew that music was what I wanted to do with my life.
Any goals you want to achieve this year?
This year, I definitely want to be able to have more people hear my music and just create things that I’m proud of. I also really wanted to create a merch line this year and I’m very lucky that I was able to achieve that.
Anyone you would like to work with?
Ideally, I would love to work with Bryson Tiller or Kehlani, but I am also open to just being able to work with as many artists as possible and build a community that way.
Any up and coming artist/entrepreneurs you look up to or would like to shout out?
I definitely want to shout out my team, Gutter Music Entertainment, because we keep each other on track and have a really good support system between us. I also want to give a shoutout to Danilo Concepcion, Andrews Lora, and Gabriela Clarke because they are some of the most hard-working people I know and they have always been people that I feel inspired by, as well as supported in my own craft.
What is the most recent project you’re working on?
Apart from my merch line just dropping, I am currently working on a project that I’m calling “The Summer Tapes’ which is a mix of collaborative tracks with a summer feel to them. The first single from this is dropping on June 24 with Jus Otto and Von Buckss.
What struggles do you go through as an up and coming artist/entrepreneur?
I think the main struggle is being heard and building a community that wholeheartedly supports you. There is a lot that goes into getting your music heard and sometimes it doesn’t reach as many people as you want, which can be kind of discouraging at times.
How do you overcome these struggles?
For me, I just know that this is something I’m meant to do and because of that, it’s a journey. I also feel like I’m still growing a lot as a person and an artist, so I’m still waiting to reach my full potential in some ways. Plus, I’m a firm believer in everything happening when it’s supposed to, so I just know that when it is my time to really shine, I will.
