On August 5th 2022, Onarsé’s recent single “Fuck Me Up” was released. However, on the same evening, Onarsé also performed at 871 Agincourt Hotel as an opening act for local Sydney artist Dinley Jones. After showing snippets of rehearsal clips on instagram, it was finally time for Onarsé to show us just what he has to offer. To my surprise, along with many of the audience, what we witnessed was far beyond what we expected to see from Onarsé. Or as I heard someone in the audience scream, “I was not expecting this!”.
From the moment Onarsé stepped on stage, a distinctively alluring aura he possessed automatically captivated the crowd. To be quite frank, he commanded the audience throughout his show. Starting with taking off his oversized Fendi jacket and revealing what appears to be his signature stage costume, wearing designs from Versace and Burberry. Onarsé has a natural gift of connecting with his audience in a way so authentic, so raw, yet does not invalidate the undeniably incomparable talent he has; which I saw took many people by surprise. When Onarsé aggressively continued to cuss at the crowd, the looks on people’s faces were quite hilarious, because they were not expecting to be spoken to in such a sarcastically playful manner; which only makes me comprehend better as to why Onarsé possesses such an alluring aura about him.
When it comes to attending a live show, what matters most is the performance of the artist, right? The first song on the setlist was his latest single “Fuck Me Up”, Onarsé was only singing a couple words and before you know it, he was kneeling on the floor staring at someone in the crowd ever so seductively as he graciously moves his body; then performs his simple, yet high energy choreography. Can you imagine why most of us in the audience were caught so off guard? No. You can’t. Not until you see it for yourself! Onarsé is a natural performer and entertainer, he knows exactly what to give his audience, when to give it to them and most importantly he knows how to keep us wanting more.
What absolutely amazed me was his ability to perform his songs with such high energy, perform quite a bit of choreography, shake his head as he’s jumping on stage and suddenly drop to his knees yet still have the stamina to sing with a very audibly clear tone. Although there were some moments where Onarsé focused too much on his body movements rather than his vocals causing very minor mistakes, his voice seemed so independent and unaffected by his body’s movement which was spectacular to see. The influence of some of the world’s greatest performers such as Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga can be reflected on Onarsé’s artistry and performance style; highlighting the commitment and dedication he has in ensuring perfected craft.
Another very important factor which, in my opinion, makes Onarsé a very unique artist from the copy and paste that’s happening in the music scene is his peculiar writing ability; also a very ‘Onarsé way’ of arranging his songs and the impressive versatility of his voice, which enables him to effortlessly sing between a blend of contrasting genres to give his songs the memorable signature Onarsé sound. Not only can he lyrically write songs perfectly, but his performance style flawlessly executes the ability to go from singing energetically choreographed dance tracks to heartfelt vocally challenging ballads. Which makes me wonder, did I mention his vocal range? Onarsé impressively hit notes in the 6th octave and from hearing some of his song’s backup vocals, it’s evident how he’s able to skilfully utilise every octave of his voice to bring to life songs which only Onarsé himself can create and perform. The Influence of Onarsé’s most admired artist, Mariah Carey, can evidently be seen in the delivery of his music. But to be able to execute such skills at a high level? Onarsé is not an artist to take lightly.
Seeing Onarsé perform for the first time was quite the experience, one which I’d like to experience again. To be honest, Onarsé is a very distinctive artist I have NEVER seen before in the music scene of Sydney. His production style is elegant, classic and distinctive from today’s copy and paste overproduced sound. He’s a highly skilled performer who is able to effortlessly sing and dance his choreography simultaneously. He has mastered the art of utilising his alluring aura and radiating infectious confidence. Onarsé’s songwriting abilities are highly versatile, sophisticated and vividly imaginative. He possesses a vocal range which many only dream to have. He doesn’t follow trends when it comes to the sound of his music or his image as an artist, which sets his originality apart even more. Let’s not forget to mention that he is still currently an independent artist and one who is “the perfect package”, as record label’s like to say. In simpler terms, Onarsé was born to be a star and we shall see how his music career progresses!
