New Single About The Rapidly Changing World

Frederick, MD –

Daryltron is back at it again, as he has announced he’s dropping his next single ‘Rock N
Roll’ July 1st! I’m always excited to hear what he has coming out next; it’s always something
different. This one really caught me off guard though, being a genre I wasn’t expecting, and
coming with an aesthetic in the video to match. Just when I think I have it figured out, he
shows that I am mistaken…and I’m glad to be. I say this, because it’s usually within the
realm of Funk/Soul/R&B, in the 70s and 80s zeitgeist. Again, while even then he operates over a large span of sounds, this is especially different. He brings a modern EDM feel this time around. The visuals that accompany it are sometimes funny, sometimes unsettling, and even at times both. The surprising nature of the style only adds to the message of the song; the feeling of uncertainty in this strange era we live in. This is a Daryltron I don’t know. It’s symbolic that he uses deep fake and green screen effects to enhance the fact that you know it’s him, but oddly not. Duplicating and altering himself to look like various celebrities, whilst matching the lyrics that mention these said personalities, is a clever way to build a dialogue about cloning, AI, and internet fame. It’s all a bit subtle yet somehow obvious at once. I also liked the way he weaved in various viral videos and movie scenes, making visual references in creative ways. Of course, I
had to ask him what his inspiration was for such zaniness, and for now you can give the track a listen at:

“Originally, it was just a parody of Gangnam Style…that was it. I got to thinking though,
‘well that’s a parody of dance music in itself’. This dates the song as to when I came up with the idea, and so being that I kept pushing it’s release day back, you know…a lot of things happened within that time. It was actually very recently that I started thinking about the different ways the lyrics could be interpreted, and how that was within the context of this new world we live in…as we can see The Singularity that futurists had warned us about come into view. So for example, I say in the hook, ‘yo shawty…ya got a body fa sho…’ That takes a much more creepy meaning, when you think about cloning, or robotics. So, I took a Pop style song, and gave it a new kind of subtext.”

Now that I think about it, this isn’t the first time he’s done something that was a bit concerning. 2021’s ‘My Shows’, his most-watched video so far, had a similar feel. In it, he dealt with themes of isolation due to the pandemic. This time however, it’s done in a more cryptic
way. That’s the part I find so eerie; that it’s within the realm of the ‘uncanny valley’, keeping this ‘thing’ lurking in the shadows. The movies where you don’t actually see the monster always have this effect. He also went on to add that he’s not ‘all gloom and doom’, and never one to be too serious (which any fan of his will know). ‘It’s hard to say how the future will play out for certain’, and he definitely adds an element of his signature goofiness. After all, the song did begin it’s life as a comical piece. The turkey suit he dons is a nice touch, even traditional, incorporating his ‘Turkey Dance’. This harkens back to countless eras of music crazes, creating an interesting
juxtapose of dance fads, the internet, and tech both current and imagined. We get a mix of the familiar with something new and uncertain. In that sense, one of the main themes of the song is a clash of different worlds, and living in a time of transition. Another thing he adds…is that the video may be misinterpreted as a means of poking fun at conspiracy theorists. There’s brief scenes of messages like ‘they watch us’, ‘they clone us’, and the ever-classic ‘obey’. The real touchy one is where he sports a tinfoil hat; a blatant vehicle for those bashing conspiracies. Daryltron goes on to say that the point of the video is to have fun and provoke thought, but never to come to any solid conclusion. There’s no hard stance, which would be required in order to ‘troll anyone’.

“That would contradict the whole idea, and that’s…that we don’t know enough about what’s going on…to be certain of anything. That’s what’s so disturbing about these subjects…and in a funny way, part of what makes the video so fun…”
