Elton John’s protege releases the LGBTQ anthem, ‘Faith Over Family’
‘Faith Over Family’ is the name of the new song from the man who Elton John named as his protege over ten years ago, James Billett. Having taken some time out of the spotlight to do some more soul searching before venturing back into the music industry, Billett is now ready to present himself as the artist he always wanted to be – and ‘Faith Over Family’ is the result.
Told in Billett’s softly spoken vocal, ‘Faith Over Family’ is the result of the homophobia which Billett has been witnessing in the world. The song tells the tale of a father who cannot put aside his religious beliefs to accept his son the way that he is. Tinged with the well-trodden storytelling elements of country music, ‘Faith Over Family’ is certainly an authentic and honest reflection of stories such as these, and shows Billet to be a true force to be reckoned with.
In a difficult time period such as this one, we might just need the sort of quiet strength which this song brings about.
Instead of inciting rage with his lyrics, the song speaks of disappointment, sadness, and ultimately, hope in the possibility of changing minds. As the last lyrics of “you can change, you can change, you can change,” it is a positive message we are left with, overall.
