The EP opens with anthem “The Defiant Ones.” This track opens with punk rock drums that blend with quick electronic beats, immediately energizing and elevating this track into one of my favorites. “The Defiant Ones” is meant to get your blood pumping, it feels like the perfect work out track and a group of hedons running through the streets of a damp city. I can’t say you’ll have the same experience when this track graces your ears, but that’s the magic of Elektragaaz’s musical mission at work. They take what’s familiar and make it their own. Spy themed track “CounterSpy” opens with a beat that reminds me of Bauhaus before it evolves into something entirely of its own making.
The production of The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 is awe inspiring. There are many collaborators that come together to bring Redband’s musical vision to life. The precision on each song can be felt and heard. The more you listen to each song the more you realize how many different styles and types of music goes into one song. Each song builds on itself, these constant changes in pitch and tempo come across as a change in emotion. The song still guides the feelings just like a film score does but instead you get to create the visuals. It’s not to see something when you listen to this The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4. Elektragaaz is truly on another level of musical experimentation.
While The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 has an overall electronic sound to it, none of the songs sound similar. The album doesn’t sound disjointed at all thought, it still remains cohesive. Imagine watching a double feature and the two films are different genre’s but made by the same director, that’s how The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 is. Elektragaaz proves that music can be just as evocative and thought provoking as songs that feature vocals. Instrumental music is often underrated or, lost in a world that is dominated by singer/songwriters. The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 lets the instruments do all the talking, creating a completely unique atmosphere.
