Dark Below Enter 2023 With Groove-Heavy Track “Hate Being Human”, Announce Tour Dates

Missouri Power Trio Is Climbing The Rock Charts

Missouri power trio Dark Below are charging into the New Year with groove-heavy track ‘Hate Being Human’. The song is rising on the Rock Radio charts, making a big leap to Top 30 already in 2023. The music was produced by the acclaimed Malcolm Springer (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, Fear Factory) and Jason Schrick for JPS Productions at East Iris Studios in Nashville, TN.

The song is a post-grunge anthem with a relentless hook and thunderous backbeat, layered with Nirvana-esque vocals that lament the sturm and drang that is so pervasive in the world today. It is a cry of angst against the constant divisions in society as a whole, questioning when it will ever end. The band is hoping that we can all come together – for everyone’s sake. They are imploring everyone to make better choices, and realize that we are all in this together: That the constant strife and division hurts our society as a whole. One of the more poignant lines in the lyrics speaks volumes: “We’re so defeated that we’ll believe in anything to ease the pain, But our divisions are all decisions, decisions we don’t have to make, I hate being human”. The chorus drives the point home: “The fear has settled in, So let the end begin; You make me hate my skin… I hate being human”.

Dark Below’s Josh Campbell says We wrote “Hate Being Human” because of our general frustration with the human race today. I don’t literally ‘hate being human’, but sometimes you see the things we do to one another and the reasons why we do those things and it’s just frustrating. The lyrics come from that frustration and mostly describe what I’d consider to be pretty standard human behavior”.

He continues: “The song itself came together from an incomplete song idea I’d had for a few years and then the intro guitar riff was written in the studio. Our producer Malcolm was looking for a backing loop for a different song and when he started playing the one that is used in “Hate Being Human”, I started playing that intro guitar riff. I was just messing around so it wasn’t like something I already had, but it worked, and that combination of the loop and guitar riff ended up becoming the intro/verse for the song. Our co-producer Jason had the idea for the ‘Hate Being Human’ line and that’s honestly what made the song and set it in the direction it went”.

Dark Below recently played a regional tour, including a sold-out Christmas show at Rose Music Hall in Columbia for Missouri’s Toys For Tots organization. They have been building their live performance credentials for the past 5 years, with supportings slots for Buckcherry, Saliva, Pop Evil, Smile Empty Soul, The Veer Union, and more.

2022 was a breakthrough year that saw the band rise on the national stage with the release of ‘Tense’, which was supported with playlist placements on Spotify & Apple Music, and charted Top 15 on the BDS Rock indicator chart, as well as Top 10 on the SMR Active Rock chart. The band has previously released their self-titled EP in 2017, and the single “Halo” in 2019.

A new full-length album is in the final stages of being recorded, with a release expected in the spring of 2023. All tracks will be produced by Schrick and Springer. The band will playing live again soon – with a March Tour with Scotty Austin (Ex-Saving Abel), Flaw and Shallow Side on the books, and more dates to be announced soon.
