On Monday, October 7, 1968, EKU President Robert Martin turned on WEKU's new 50,000 watt transmitter from the studios in the Donovan Building on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. In 1970, WEKU joined 89 other public radio stations as charter members of a new educational radio network known as National Public Radio. Today, WEKU broadcasts on nine FM stations in Central and Eastern Kentucky reaching more than 1.5 million residents. To enhance listeners understanding of issues that impact the people of Kentucky, the nation and the world as the most trusted and reliable source of in-depth, fact-based journalism and arts, cultural and entertainment programming. To deliver trusted and indispensable news, information and entertainment audio programs that contain diverse and thought-provoking content which contributes to lifelong learning.
