Thank you for taking the time to have this interview with IMAAI.
Tell us about your music.
I write and produce my music myself! I take lots of influence from the indie pop and folk genres. My favorite artists are Gracie Abrams and The Lumineers. While I love to write from personal experience, I also like to take inspiration from outside myself. I get inspired to write by reading books and watching movies/tv shows. Writing songs is by far my favorite part of being a musician.
When did you start performing?
I writing and performing music when I was 13 years old. I did the school musical at the time and really loved the performance aspect. My parents told me that if I wanted to be a singer I should also write my own songs. I then started writing and performing around my hometown, Cary, NC. I would play in bars and at festivals all the time. I then went to college at Belmont University and have since gotten my degree in Songwriting. I started releasing my own music when I was 19 years old. I never really planned on being an artist, but I really wanted people to hear the songs I was writing and at the time it seemed like the best way to get my music out there.
What do you consider to be your hometown and how does that affect your music?
My hometown is Cary, NC. I lived there from the ages of 3-21. Country music is very popular in my hometown and when I started writing songs, that was the kind of music I wrote. I loved artists like Kelsea Ballerini and Miranda Lambert. It’s partly the reason I ended up going to college in Nashville, TN, because it’s “country music city.” My hometown definitely affected my music in the beginning, but going to college caused me to change up the genres I write. I found myself co-writing with more pop-writers than country writers and that ultimately switched up my sound as an artist. Meeting all these new songwriters definitely influenced and encouraged me to branch out and try new genres. I still love country music, but it’s not the kind of music I make as an artist anymore.
What performers have been your inspiration?
Like I said above, I love Gracie Abrams and The Lumineers at the moment. Gracie Abrams lyrics really speak to me and The Lumineers always write really catchy hooks that can get stuck in your head easily. One of my favorite artists of all time is Ariana Grande. She is just an incredible performer and singer (I wish I could sing like her) and I grew up listening to her music.
What do you base your success on?
I base my success on if the music I put out is the music I like. If I am being my authentic self and putting out music I enjoyed writing and producing, then I am successful.
What was your latest musical release?
The latest song I released is titled “What Once Was” and it’s about an on again off again relationship. It’s an indie pop ballad. The lyrics reflect the indecision that goes on in a relationship like that, but also touches on how you will eventually get pulled back into it. This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.
Do you have any news to share?
I will be releasing my first album in July!! No official date yet, but I am super excited.
