Thank you for taking the time to have this interview with IMAAI.
Tell us about your music.
I have been writing music for quite awhile.
I am a classically trained Cellist, So my influences are from that time ass well as the popular music I like. So more of an avant guard Indie Chamber music kind of music.
I love to have other instruments as well to make a cohesive and dynamic sound.
Of course producing a song is the most fun, because you can layer the music with instruments, and other motives.
When did you start performing?
I have been performing myself since I was 7.
And I did have a band, who we still perform together . Also made up of some classical and jazz players.
I got to where I am today from lots of turns in my life and career.
I was very much a classical cellist, and when I wasn’t fulfilling my idea of a solo career, I quit for awhile. I even sold my cello, to buy it back 6 months later. ( which doesn’t really happen). When I got the cello back I started playing with a singer songwriter and then we went on tour. As we were driving I started hearing lyrics in my head and just tried to write some music. And Im still writing today.
What do you consider to be your hometown and how does that affect your music?
Im from Cleveland Ohio and it is important because I grew up with the Cleveland Orchestra. My step-father was in the orchestra and I had a few teachers as well who were in the Orchestra.
That town is known for music, I mean the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is there!
It is a grounded place with lots of green and a huge Lake so the area is conducive for growing up with good values.
Otherwise, I currently live in LA, and it is a town of huge amounts of talent. Everyone comes here to get famous. So you could just imagine the talent!
What performers have been your inspiration?
There are so many, from Classical musicians, to singers in the Pop industry.
I think a lot depends on the music I like.
In classical music I really enjoy Ray Chen, because he is fun and a bit of a ham, which is sometimes missing from the Classical realm.
I like Lily Allen, because she seems to say lyrics that most people won’t. I always loved George Michael, such a great voice and Freddy Mercury. Both amazing singers and also super creative and fun performers.
What do you base your success on?
Success is a tricky word. Most people relate it to money.
But for me if I can touch people and they enjoy the music, that means success.
And of course it is hard to please all ears. I think the music today is super processed, auto-tune, everyone performs with backing tracks, so you are hearing a recorded version along with the live version.
I think that goes completely against the truth of music and performing.
So Im still striving for BIG success and I won’t ever give up.
Even if my music, is a bit different than the industry , which is about 10-20 people all writing the same music. So many songs are written by groups of people.
So success is a tough word to see its manifestation when you are still striving for your ideal of success.
What was your latest musical release?
My latest single is Savor, which I co-wrote with one of my colleagues. We have written a bunch of songs together. It is about being savored and savoring things in one’s life. And seeing that if we do that there is a savior ing within that. I love to play on words…
I also sing about letting go of what we hold onto to get to the savoring part of your life.
And to have fun with it…savoring flavors, neighbors, cooks and waiters! 🙂
Do you have any news to share?
Im working on another single, I just have to record the vocals and Im going to work with a guy who just worked with Dianne Warren and Belinda Carlyle. So Im very excited. We just have to get our schedules together!!
