D.W.D.Y. (aka, “Don’t Wanna Die Young”), is an original song written, sung and composed by the indie, alt, electropop band, EMPERATRIX. The story behind D.W.D.Y. is a personal journey of dealing with a lover who is struggling with drug addiction and the pain this can inflict on the other person. The song takes its listeners through a night when you realize you’ve been influenced to be someone you’re not; doing things like taking drugs and drinking heavily to numb the pain of drowning in an unhealthy relationship; but it all becomes no longer enough to shut out the voices in the head that are a mix of doubt, the fear of success, the fear of being alone or abandoning someone in their time of need, yet that deep down pull to keep going with your dreams and come through. The chaos that ensues as you are racing against the clock to save that person’s life (when the lover has a near-fatal overdose) and finding the strength to finally overcome it all and walk away into a new beginning. Starting with breathy whispers and growing into powerful vocals, the music swells in climax with the vocals in the end, as if to offer a sense of triumph in being able to rise above the hell one has just endured and head back towards the sunlight. The new single by EMPERATRIX is here to give hope to others that you can persevere and make it through even the worst of times. It’s more than just an “anti-drug” anthem, states the lead vocalist and lyricist, Rachel Rosson (Known to many by her stage name, Rachel Rocksavage, known as huge classic and prog rock enthusiast in the local music scenes around Tennessee), “We were afraid, years ago after writing this song that if we ever released it people would think it was just a lame, anti-drug song and feared we would get ragged on by other, more hard-core bands around us. We came from the Murfreesboro underground music scene where much of the acts were tough-talking punks and metal guys, some amazingly awesome human-beings, don’t get me wrong, but I think we were sometimes afraid of showing that softer side of ourselves back then. But at this point, in our lives, we realize now that it’s not that people who have done drugs or made mistakes are bad or tainted, that’s the opposite of the point. We feel that all people are intrinsically flawed and we all just do our best and most of us have demons we all try to fend off as best as we can. We want people to know who are deep into addictions, or unhealthy, toxic habits, codependent relationships, ect. that the best way to pull yourself up out of it is to just never stop dreaming. We relocated in the past few years to Nashville and our whole lives have dramatically changed and I think if we didn’t face the dark times in our younger years, we might not be as strong as we are now but we feel we survived it all for a purpose, and that’s to be able to go out there and inspire others to keep going, no matter what.”
EMPERATRIX is a female musical duo, based out of Nashville, TN. A blend of electronic, indie and alternative genres, with a mix of progressive and psychedelic rock roots, EMPERATRIX takes the experiences of their personal life and turns these stories into music to share with the other. They are a pair of songwriters, who love to compose their own music. Whitney, lead guitar, is an incredible instrumentalist playing a unique style of guitar for many years, completely self-taught and she also plays bass, keyboard and drums as well as most recently, adding to vocals as the backup and even writing melodic and lyrics parts with their newest project. The lead singer of the group, Rachel, also enjoys creative writing as a published poet, stage and film acting and previously owned her own vintage fashion online shop before the music began to pick up. Whitney is also a graphic designer, painter and photographer who loves to create conceptual art pieces for others as well as abstract beauties, such as the obscure castle background that became the main image for the band’s current single covers which will all culminate for the full EP, expected to come out later this year.
