After the untimely 2016 death of his father from cancer-related causes, Matt Westin decided to honor his father’s memory by walking away from a promising engineering career, to focus on his music, something his father had staunchly supported. Matt is an International Music and Entertainment Association nominee. He is #44 on the International Country Artists chart at www.countrymusicchart.net/1-7-april-2018.htm. His music is being played and charted on stations around the globe. Here is an exclusive interview with Matt Westin:
IMAAI: Congrats on the release of your album, “Legacy.” You’ve had 2 fantastic singles come from the album. What are your plans for a 3rd single, or a music video?
Matt Westin: Thank you. Michael Stover at MTS Management Group used is experience and expertise to choose the first 2 singles from my album, and I think they were great choices. If we decide to do a 3rd, I think there is still plenty to choose from and we’ll decide which one to go with when we get there. As for a music video, I have some ideas…
IMAAI: Is country music Dead? Why, or why not?
MW: No way. They say legends never die, so country can never die. The artists of the past are still being listened to today, and probably will be forever to some degree. As for today’s mainstream country music, I struggle to call it country music at all, but there are a lot of real country artists out there that, I believe, are turning the tide and bringing back the grit and style that made country music what it used to be and what it will be again. What you hear on the radio is only a small portion of the music being made today. I have faith that country will be great again. I hope to be a part of it!
IMAAI: What is the single biggest challenge facing music artists today?
MW: There are so many ways to get your music out there today, but that just means getting noticed in that ocean of music is even harder.
IMAAI: Tell us about a Matt Westin live show. What should fans expect? When will you be performing live?
MW: High energy, interactive, lighthearted fun, and real. When I perform, I always want the people to feel like they are part of it and I am connecting with them. I like to be myself and joke a bit and chat and let my personality come through. It’s more personable and relatable, I think.
IMAAI: What was the first album or single that you bought with your own money?
MW: I’m not sure, because that was a long time ago. My first album was an Elvis cassette my father gave me when I was about 3, and it blew me away. But I’d have to guess my first self-bought album was probably Queen or Aerosmith.
IMAAI: Where in the world would you love to play, that you haven’t and why?
MW: I think playing for the troops overseas would be the ultimate honor and thrill.
IMAAI: Should musicians get involved in politics, including posting about their political beliefs? Why or why not?
MW: Well, it’s still a free country, so musicians can say whatever they want. I personally don’t think it’s a great idea from a career standpoint, because it can be so divisive. But on the other hand, musicians can have a quite a large audience for spreading their message, so it can be very effective as well. It’s a two-edged sword. I think it’s a personal choice and it should always be.
IMAAI: Thanks for the fantastic conversation! Where can our readers find out more info about you?
MW: Thank you for having me. You can find me at www.mattwestin.com, where there are links to my Facebook page, my Twitter page, and Youtube page, as well as links to where you can find my music. My album “Legacy” is available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and just about every online retailer and streaming service.
