Shakir Stewart Legacy Lives on Through Empowerment Fund

Shakir Stewart, right hand man to L.A. Reid, who signed Ciara, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and Beyonce’ to her song writing deal, legacy continues.

In honor of the life and accomplishments of Shakir Stewart ’91, Saint Mary’s College High School in conjunction with Mrs. Portia Labrie, Shakir’s mother, is proud to announce the establishment of the Shakir Stewart Empowerment Fund.

Shakir contributed much of his success to the education he received at Saint Mary’s, where great emphasis was placed on building character in young men, highlighting the elements of compassion, brotherhood, and altruism. His leadership skills surfaced at Saint Mary’s where he
actively participated in student government.

Shakir has been described as a born negotiator with an ear for the right sound and the vision for the right deal. As a student at Morehouse College, Shakir became well known in the local entertainment industry.

By age of 24, Shakir had earned the title of Senior Vice-President of Hitco Music Publishing Company. His last position was Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam. During his impressive career, Shakir discovered, signed and developed many well-known artists such as
Beyonce, Rick Ross, Ciara, and Young Jeezy, just to name a few.

Shakir died in 2008 at the age of 34 saddening relatives, friends, and the music industry.

With this scholarship, we would like to continue Shakir’s passion forgiving by providing students with the opportunity of a Saint Mary’s education.  This has become the life mission of Shakir’s mother and she is seeking help from all the people that were a part of her son’s
