Interview with Felicia Alima

Felicia, How long have you been making music and how did you get started?
I have always been into music since I was a young child. My father was a musician, so I grew up with that influence. In my teens I had written and produced original material, then I moved to the US in 2002. I pursued the art of mixtape deejaying for a few years before returning to my true passion of singing, so I’ve been pursuing music seriously for almost 3 years now.

Who are the other members of your band?
I’m a solo recording artist, but I do play with a 6-piece band when I do shows. My entourage consists of a drummer, guitarist, bassist and 2 back-up singers. Most of the time I’ll also have a collab artist as a guest emcee.

What genre of music do you usually perform?
I perform Urban R&B, Pop…all Beautiful, unique, honest, catchy, addictive, fresh

Who is your inspiration?
People and life all inspire me. I always write with something important in mind. Either something I have experienced personally, or something someone else has experienced or could relate to.

What was the name of the last song that you wrote?
Your Love". It’s the title track for my new album that will be released in 2009. It’s a song about love. The love for music.

Music in general inspired me to write that song. I love music so much. I just think about how I use music as an avenue to release my dreams, inspirations, and even stresses. It’s like a relationship! In the song, I use a lot of puns and metaphors which could be comprehended as the love I have for a man, but it’s really the love I have for music, and what it does for me in return.

What new things do you have going on? A CD release, tour, etc?
I have a lot of great things going on! I am set to release a very important single about human trafficking by the end of this year. The single is called "Trade". Proceeds will be donated to the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW). Next year, I will be releasing a remixes album which contains remixes of songs from my last album "Know Me", and then I will release my newest album "Your Love" later that year. I’m also always doing live shows, so check out my web site for more info at www.feliciaalima.com .

Are you working on anything new?
Yes. I am working on material for my remixes album that is due out in 2009, and also working on new material for my album "Your Love" which is due out later that year.

Where are some of the places that you have been playing?
This year I have played at a lot of outdoor events around Madison. Namely Brat Fest, Dane Dances and the Willy St Fair.

Where can people learn more about you? What’s your web site?
You can add me on myspace at www.myspace.com/feliciaalima or visit my blog site at www.feliciaalima.com .

What words of wisdom do you have for other musicians who are just getting started?
First of all, make sure you do it because you love it, and no other reason. Then you should network with people that can help you get to the next level, producers, other artists, song-writers, promoters, etc.. Know your style and do not release anything until you are 100% happy with it. Create a presence online so people can learn about you and your music, and stay connected. After that, you can figure the rest out!

Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the fans?
I am an independent recording artist originally from Australia, but now living in the States. I have worked with top producers whom have produced for the likes of the Pussycat Dolls, T.I., Angie Stone, Eminem and more! Hit me up and let me know what you think of my music!
