A charismatic leading intellectual musician of psychedelic culture in Italy, a weird free improvising experimenter. Vittorio Nistri and Filippo Panichi for the first time together with a brand new album: a gem of psychedelic-progressive-electronic chamber music!
Vittorio Nistri is a keyboard player, electronic adventurer and composer. He is the founder of Deadburger Factory, one of the most innovative Italian avant-rock bands, with a very personal blend of RIO, electronic, kraut rock and songwriting. Vittorio plays also with other cult Italian experimental artists such as Claudio Milano/Nickelodeon, Forbici di Manitù, St Ride, Maisie and so on, and is also involved in the psychedelic national scene with Ossi.
Filippo Panichi began as a guitarist, but for years he has dedicated his work to free improvisation performances in the electroacoustic experimentation (ambient-noise, drone music, etc.). He invented and fabricated new instruments (for example a set of electrified springs) and uses “found sounds” normally inaudible to the human ear, which he manages to capture with an ultrasound detector (built to track the flights of bats). Filippo has self-produced numerous solo improvised albums, he is a videomaker too.
These two Italian musical agitators have created together a new and ambitious eponymous album: Vittorio Nistri-Filippo Panichi, released by Snowdonia Dischi on 1st november 2024. This new album is, for Vittorio, the first entirely “non-rock”: the music is 100% instrumental and experimental, without songs, nor voices, nor bass/drums rhythm section. For Filippo this album is clearly different from his previous productions due to the structured and “ensemble” musical context created by Vittorio, and into which Filippo was able to fit in with surprising naturalness. Filippo also created the videos for this album.
Vittorio and Filippo started with an improvised concert together four years ago, without having ever rehearsed before, live in radio streaming. Their album summarizes the interests and areas of reference of both: avant-rock, psychedelic music, songwriting for ensemble and arrangements for the first, solo free impro, ambient, noise and drone for the second. This combination works and it demonstrates that diversity is precious. Nistri-Panichi is a new and creative psychedelic-progressive-electronic chamber music, it is a research and experiment album, not created from theoretical assumptions but from flesh, blood, hearts and nerves.
The album is a reflection about the sense and the purpose of creating, composing, playing, painting – spending sleepless nights around a nuance or a sonic detail – in the AI age, in the era of artificial music created on demand. So Vittorio and Filippo had written and played a new music entirely handmade, with human touch and a lot of electronic sounds generated by strange instruments such as electronic toys, weird synths, electrified springs, ulstrasounds detectors. In addition to this analogue electronic, anarchic and improvised music there is a string and brass ensemble featuring wonderful italian musicians. Even the painting by Beppe Stasi and the graphic design by Gabriele Menconi have a human touch: the front cover is an investigation about the incredible worlds in a portion of a painting of a few cm.
The album will be available both on double vinyl (recorded on 3 sides) and on a three-fold digipak CD. In both cases, with a booklet conceived as a true art book, and with digital download coupon included.
